Neptune Terminals Overpass Extension
The Neptune Bulk Terminals in North Vancouver plays an integral role in connecting the Canadian economy with overseas markets by transporting 30 million tonnes of products annually. In order to create safer, more efficient access to the coal pit, a permanent bridge crossing needed to be built—that’s where we came in.
Our team provided design engineering and construction support services for the design of a road bridge using three curved steel box girders with composite concrete deck for one span, a reinforced concrete deck slab monolithic with the supporting piers for the other span and a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall embankment creating the approach ramp at the terminal. The bridge and embankment offer a direct route into the steel making coal stockpile from the existing overpass bridge and approach ramp, while the new bridge spans the entrance to the settlement pond, access road, and multiple rail tracks. The design of this project—which included the conceptual design of four design alternatives—required the collaboration of various disciplines including structural, roadway, electrical and drainage engineering.
Now complete, access to the coal pit and other facilities within the core of the facility is considerably safer. There’s reduced traffic congestion for heavy trucks accessing the facility, and greater access flexibility for current and future facility expansion.
