Refreshing a historic building in downtown Calgary

Achieving LEED Platinum certification is an accomplishment for a new building, but we were faced with the challenge of renovating a depression era building to achieve this standard. Stantec’s mechanical, energy management, and commissioning professionals partnered with The City of Calgary and a number of other specialist consultants, to sensitively restore a piece of Calgary’s history.

The team preserved the façade by installing an energy efficient building envelope liner. With the building better sealed from the elements, heating, cooling, and condensation problems were minimized. We renewed the original daylight and natural ventilation options and added chilled beam technology to ceilings for cooling. These measures have dramatically improved occupant comfort. In addition to these system improvements, our team added solar hot water heating on the roof and set the building up for future modifications to improve sustainability, including infrastructure for a district heating option and rainwater harvesting. Our commissioning team implemented digital technology to keep systems running at optimal efficiency, streamlining operations and maintenance.
