Overcoming significant structural challenges to build a new entertainment hub in Perth’s city centre
The transformation of Raine Square in Perth's city centre would require the demolition and substantial refurbishment of existing structures across the precinct. With refurbishment set to take place below an office tower, construction methodology, delivery constraints, and noise issues were considered to minimise disruption.
Our structural team overcame several challenges on this project including the retention of heritage facades and forming a basement in a constrained city site, while creating smart, efficient, and cost-effective structural alterations to the existing post-tensioned concrete structure. The new structural insertions were carefully designed to minimise disruption to the surrounding active areas. Stantec worked closely with the design and construction contractor to respond to the daily issues which inevitably arise on such projects.
This latest refurbishment in Raine Square has resulted in a seven-days-a-week entertainment, dining, and retail precinct. Incorporating 40 retail stores, a 12-screen cinema complex, and boutique hotel created a vibrant late-night hub of activity within the heart of Perth, while retaining the character and charm of the city’s historic buildings.
