New Nowra Bridge is the centerpiece of a project to improve mobility in the Nowra-Bomaderry region

Bridges are some of the most important of all infrastructure. They are landmarks—and we tend to attach much cultural symbolism to bridges. So, we were excited to work with Transport for New South Wales and contractors on the Nowra Bridge project. This project includes the design and construction of a new bridge to carry northbound traffic over the Shoalhaven River, upgrading 1.7 kilometres of the A1 Princes Highway, widening an existing bridge over Bomaderry Creek, and upgrades to three key intersections.

Among the challenges was simply keeping traffic moving on temporary routes, requiring extensive civil design work. Another consideration, especially in bridge construction, is corrosion. We worked with BCRC Durability Consultants, whose assessment identified deterioration processes affecting the materials proposed for the bridge’s construction. In response, we researched and incorporated control strategies into the design, to ensure the materials met the project design life requirements.

Whether landmark or symbol, the new Nowra Bridge, upgraded intersections and additional lanes will improve traffic flow, ease congestion and improve road safety for the Nowra-Bomaderry area.
