Centenary Theatre, Taronga Zoo

Celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of Sydney’s Taronga Zoo—an iconic destination for both local and international tourists—needed a grand statement. The Zoo determined that the best way to mark the occasion would be the addition of a new theatre. The brief? To work collaboratively with the theatre designer and create an edgy, modernist infrastructure that would deliver an immersive experience for visitors.

Our specialists provided an integrated lighting and audio-visual system to enhance the experience. To balance the installation of a high functioning air-conditioning system in the basement, we also included extensive acoustic treatments to dampen mechanical noise. Form-wise, the design included polished concrete, timber casing and blades, mild steel plate foyers, textured fibre-cement panelling, and other raw materials that provided both a pleasing aesthetic and added acoustic functionality.

Anchored by a smooth, off-form concrete floor slab supported on powerful V-shaped tapered columns, the new Centenary Theatre offers a dramatic exterior presence—whereas the softly rounded facade and outdoor spaces offer visitors panoramic vistas across the Zoo, the Harbour, and the city. The 160-seat theatre promotes the broad-ranging works of the Taronga Conservation Society through a program of educational, animated, and live-action films.
