Aviation expertise and knowledge of the existing terminal buildings and security requirements was central
Dreamliners are luxury, long-distance, fuel-efficient aircraft manufactured by Boeing. When Qantas Airways wanted to create the first trans-continental, non-stop Dreamliner flight from London Heathrow (LHR) to Perth, we helped deliver airside and landside civil and structural consultancy services at Perth Airport.
The program was set to accommodate a scheduled first service—and that meant a tight timeframe of 15 months for all upgrades and alterations. Liaising with Sydney-based architects Noxon Giffen, we began planning the structural additions and alterations to the existing terminal. Next? The civil works, aviation fuel line improvements, and complying with other stringent airport regulations, including fire and security.
The project involved extensive work to establish a location for the Australian Border Force and Quarantine personnel within a previously unoccupied area, given that, up until this time, no international departures or arrivals had occurred at this terminal. To ready the terminal for international travellers, we had to create a secure flow of passengers—keeping international passengers and domestic passengers separated while maintaining safe fire escape routes in line with security requirements.
Through careful civil and structural design and working closely with all stakeholders, we helped the Perth Airport and Qantas Airways teams fine-tune their existing assets into a direct-destination hub, suitable for Dreamliner aircraft. Travellers flying from London to Perth will now have a non-stop option with expedited safety and security.
