Creating new cycling networks
Cycling or walking to work is a healthy and environmentally friendly way to commute. One of the downsides? Safely sharing roads with cars. In response, communities and governments are turning to bike-only bikeways or shared bike and pedestrian paths to separate cyclists and pedestrians from typical road traffic—on paths attuned to the needs and safety of commuters.
When the ACT government wanted to construct a bikeway, they asked us to provide construction supervision and site management services during construction of the Belconnen bikeway project in Belconnen, a northern suburb of Canberra. With shared paths, pedestrian-only, and bike-only paths, the Belconnen Bikeway is a 4.7 kilometre commuter pathway that connects Belconnen Town Centre to the University of Canberra, Radford College, and Canberra Institute of Technology Bruce Campus, as well as to the broader cycle network. Shade is provided by two hundred trees and 4,000 shrubs that were planted along the project.
Now commuters can enjoy walking and cycling, worry-free, in safety on the Belconnen Bikeway.
