The 11-storey building, situated next to the recently refurbished Reading railway station, had been empty since 2010.
We were appointed by our client Landid to provide multidisciplinary structural engineering services to enable the redevelopment of an empty building located directly next to the recently completed £500 million refurbishment of Reading Railway Station.
The existing 11-storey building, circa 1974, was stripped back to the frame. The floor plates were extended, and an additional four floors added creating over 18,000 square metres of office space, roof top terrace, double storey entrance and 800 square metres of restaurants, café and other facilities at the ground floor. Previous designs for the building required either complete demolition and re-build or upward extension with considerable new foundation works. This made the scheme financially unviable. However, using a carefully considered programme of investigations, lateral thinking and targeted strengthening works, our design has allowed four additional storeys on top of the existing building without requiring additional foundation works.
From co-working space and coffee in reception right up to ‘Roost’ (the private clubroom and garden located on the 14th floor), Thames Tower provides an exceptional working environment in the heart of Reading. It has been designed with flexibility in mind, allowing for companies who set up there to flex and grow as and where needed.
