Turning municipal waste into usable energy
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality set their sights on implementing the first Energy from Waste plant in Turkey using municipal waste—they also wanted it to be the largest of its kind in Europe. To help make this happen, we were commissioned to act as a consultant to align practices with those set by international and national standards. Our job was to ensure that all the designs meet legislative regulations and terms of conditions.
Throughout each stage in the process, the client is being kept aware of all developments through detailed reports and comments on all project designs, studies, reports, projects, and calculations prepared by the contractor—all things our team is helping to oversee. Providing Turkey with a sustainable maximum efficiency electricity source, the plant is expected to generate 110-120 megawatts of electricity by processing municipal solid waste, and has a calorific value of the waste changing between 6.000–9.000 kJ/kg.
Upon completion, this plant will provide 1.5 million people with electricity they can count on, there’s an expected 1 million ton reduction in carbon dioxide, and, to top it off, 15 percent of Istanbul’s waste will be converted into energy.
