The new facility treats residual waste from households and commercial waste from local offices, shops, and restaurants
Amey Local Government (LG) Ltd signed a £225 million contract for waste management, which includes the £60 million redevelopment of the Forest Road Recycling Centre. The contract aims to deliver savings on the current cost of service and increase recycling and reuse on the island. The goal? Minimise the amount of household waste sent to landfill and achieve a 90 percent diversion rate by 2020.
Stantec served LG as owner’s engineer, providing multidisciplinary technical specialists, and construction managers. The facility includes mechanical treatment technology to extract recyclable materials as well as a moving bed waste technology, which will create energy from non-recyclable waste. The technology will be able to accommodate up to 40,000 tonnes of waste per year, generating 23,000 megawatt hours of energy.
Construction started in 2016 and the facility will be operational in 2020, improving recycling rates on the Isle of Wight significantly.
