English National Ballet - Engineering Services
For the new East London home, the English National Ballet wanted to bring together several previously disparate functions of the institution. They engaged our engineers as part of the team to help.
Working with Glenn Howells Architects and construction and fit-out specialists BW, our mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural engineers helped shape the new features of this purpose-built facility. The new building includes a production studio with fly-tower designed for rehearsal with full set and lighting, seven full-sized rehearsal studios, a costume workshop with dye room and shoe room, and two learning and engagement spaces. It also offers a hydrotherapy pool, a gym and Pilates studio, and a green room with spacious dancer changing rooms and separate public changing rooms. Additionally, there’s dedicated space on the fourth and fifth floors for the English National Ballet School that includes three rehearsal studios, a lecture theatre, rehabilitation facilities, gym, and green room.
Located between two residential towers on a relatively small site, the 8,640-square metre, five-storey building opens out onto a piazza with a public café and retail areas. The Ballet’s new home is four times the size of their previous buildings combined. Drawing together all their needs in one space has transformed the experience of artists and employees, paving the way to provide opportunities for more people than ever before.
