Providing technical support for planning applications
Bishop’s Court Quarry is a former sand quarry with a 70-year history of mineral extraction, backfill and re-excavation. For this project, we used a multidisciplinary approach to deliver innovative solutions for transport planning to secure development of 250 dwellings on the outskirts of Exeter.
The varied history of the site presented complex ground conditions that required detailed investigations and innovative solutions. We designed and delivered a challenging enabling and earthworks scheme which included the excavation of up to 12 metres of sand fill from one end of the site, with subsequent placement at thicknesses of up to 7 metres at the other end. Our work required a closely coordinated approach to complete pre-planning transport, geotechnical, drainage, utilities, acoustics and air quality assessments in order to define constraints and maximise development capacity. Working closely with the ground improvement contractor, we designed and optimised the enabling works to provide the ground conditions necessary to support the future residential developments without the need for piled foundations.
By promoting the sustainable characteristics of the site, and providing key pedestrian and footpath links, we ensured the site was accessible by bicycle, foot, and public transport from key destinations. The result? A thoroughly connected, thriving community.
