Arran Distillery

Expanding Isle of Arran Distillers Ltd.’s operation

An increase in market demand for their whisky prompted a necessary expansion

Isle of Arran Distillers Ltd. has operated a distillery at Lochranza since 1995—today, they’re expanding their operations in response to increasing market demand for their whisky (and Scotch Whisky in general). The proposed development is located at Kilmory on the south end of the island, with the intention of producing a distinctive, heavily-peated malt whisky.

The innovative architecture is a departure from the traditional pagoda style buildings that can be seen at many Scottish distilleries. Arran’s mountains also influenced the design, leading to a roof profile that reflects both the wildlife of the island and the recognisable profile of Arran’s highest peaks—Goat Fell and Glen Rosa.

For this project, our team led the public consultation and coordinated the planning application package. We also provided an economic and tourism impact assessment, planning statement, and design and access statement that led to a grant of planning permission in August 2016. To top it off, our team provided environmental design and building services engineering, as well as ongoing advice on site development matters.

The distillery and visitor centre opened its doors to the public in June 2019. Through our assessments and statements, it is expected that the new site will increase total visitor numbers to over 200,000 by 2020.
