Creating a new focal point on campus to enhance the sense of community at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute

As a student, there’s nothing quite like taking a break from the stress of classwork and bonding with friends. Turner Place at Lavery Hall, Virginia Tech’s new dining facility, offers the perfect opportunity for students to gather and connect over a good meal and some good conversation.

A traditional “Hokie Stone” exterior (local limestone quarried by the University) leads into an anything but traditional interior.  With multi-story windows and an open staircase, the interior displays plentiful dining options. Eight food venues were created based on several thousand student surveys. The result? Something to fulfill everyone’s appetites, and food service isn’t the only program in this building.

The facility’s third level houses offices for student services as well as six general assignment classrooms with course offerings that vary by semester. The Services for Students with Disabilities office provides special access to academic programs including testing and note-taking as well as deaf and hard-of-hearing assistance. Lavery Hall is a new focal point on campus, combining programs that draw upon and enhance the campus community.
