High tech building solutions support high tech learning

Expanding the University of Washington’s Computer Science facility provides space for students to gather, collaborate, and learn.

Home to a robust tech economy including giants and startups alike, it’s not surprising that the University of Washington was facing increasing demand for their computer science and engineering programs and needed to expand their facilities. This new center acts as an extension of the existing Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science and Engineering. We were excited to bring our expertise in electrical, acoustical, and audiovisual design to the project, creating a modern and technological experience for students and faculty.

As the building program was refined during design, the functionality of the facility became more classroom instruction focused. So, we reviewed opportunities to provide appropriate service configurations and equipment. After a careful examination of the specifications and available equipment, we were able to provide continuity of service, increased reliability compared to a typical classroom building service, “give back” building square footage that could be utilized for learning and research, we also reduced initial and operating costs, and enhanced network protection.

An interesting challenge was acoustical reverberation in the atrium, and limited space for utilities. To address reverberation, our acousticians chose a sound masking material that was functional, cost-effective, and aesthetically pleasing. Altogether, the features of this high-tech learning center offer students and faculty the technological experience they expect in today’s modern classrooms.
