Careful study and assessment key to improving roadway safety
The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) wanted to address high crash spots, pavement conditions, and traffic flow along U.S. Route 60 (US 60). They engaged our team to conduct a study, assessment, and community engagement to determine potential improvement solutions.
While the average daily traffic (ADT) and peak hour traffic fit within a two-lane road’s capacity, US 60’s limited passing opportunities along with high truck traffic and congestion cause long lines and travel delays. We reviewed NMDOT’s current Pavement Conditions Assessment Report, conducted traffic counts, and analyzed crash hotspots and causes. This helped us pinpoint geometric deficiencies and develop effective, low-cost safety measures to reduce collisions. We also inventoried and assessed the condition of drainage and conducted a right-of-way (ROW) needs analysis, particularly along the BNSF rail tracks that run adjacent to US 60.
Currently, NMDOT is reviewing the results of the study and considering the four proposed options for improving the roadway in the future.
