A campus master plan update that keeps an eye to the future
The goal? Address regional transportation challenges and congestion and to take advantage of the profound advancements in transportation and technology that are changing the way people travel. When the University of Massachusetts Lowell set out to update the local transportation master plan, we served as the lead planner, focusing on a holistic and partnership-based approach working with the City of Lowell and local agencies within the Greater Lowell Region.
Solutions include creating a signature, intra-campus, multi-use path spine on Pawtucket Street, collaborating with local transit agencies to enhance regional bus service, developing last-mile solutions to connect the city’s commuter rail station, and refining parking management and pricing to reduce congestion in core campus parking lots.
The plan also keeps an eye to the future, planning for more shared rides, identifying opportunities for autonomous vehicle pilots, and using curb space in high-demand locations more efficiently.
When implemented, these updates to the transportation master plan will help students, faculty, and other regional travelers better use their regional transportation network.
