Engineering the destination for Austin’s biggest events
When the University of Texas at Austin outgrew its medical school facilities, its aging arena was the only viable space to expand—sports, music, and community events would need a new home. The University looked to us for help transforming a sloped parking lot into a destination arena for big-name events.
We provided all site-related civil engineering services for the new venue. To fit the arena’s footprint, Red River Street was realigned. Our team designed traffic signals and pedestrian hybrid beacons as part of this effort, improving safety on campus. We also worked with the student-run bicycle advocacy group in this process to upgrade the site. Our creative site solutions honored the state’s commitment to protect its landscapes. We facilitated relocation of precious oaks deemed City of Austin Heritage Trees, a multimillion-dollar effort on its own. And we also set much of the building and infrastructure underground to preserve clear views of the Texas State Capitol.
The University of Texas, City of Austin, and Texas Department of Transportation had major stakes in the project. With our help, these partners realized their vision—Moody Center is a modern architectural icon befitting the live music capital of the world.
