Creating a welcoming destination
A new multidisciplinary think tank, the Joyce Cummings Center serves as the home of Tufts University’s new Data-Intensive Studies Center, the Fletcher School executive education programs, the Center for Applied Brain and Cognitive Sciences, the Tufts Gordon Institute, and programs in computer sciences, economics, and mathematics.
Committed to sustainability, the university established a goal of 42% reduction in energy use—a goal they are on target to surpass. Sustainable design strategies include high-performance exterior envelope design, exterior solar shades, ultra-low carbon MEP systems, and triple glazing with a low window-to-wall ratio.
The interior spaces provide a flexible design that advances Tufts’ goal of delivering excellence in teaching and learning. Throughout the building, diverse academic departments are fused with forward-thinking spaces, seating nooks, and open lounges for individual study and group collaboration.
As a new east gateway to Tufts’ campus, the building provides a dynamic space that supports the distinct needs of students, faculty, and the community at large. With an active ground-floor entry and plaza, it serves as a welcoming destination for the university community and visitors alike.
