Attracting students, faculty, and staff to thrive in an environment of curiosity, creativity, and engagement

Tufts is a leader in American higher education, distinctive for its success as a moderately-sized university that excels at research and is committed to providing students with a personal experience. Tufts is a blend of a research university and a liberal arts college, a unique combination that attracts students, faculty, and staff who thrive in an environment of curiosity, creativity, and engagement.

Once the home of a cardboard box manufacturer, the brick building was stripped to its bones and reconceived as an informal workspace for teaching, research, and group study areas. In keeping with the Tufts commitment to sustainability, the redeveloped 574 Boston Avenue complex is an environmentally-friendly building with low energy consumption.

The 100,000-square-foot, four-story, timber-frame structure incorporates active-learning classrooms, physics and astronomy laboratories, human factors engineering, occupational therapy, community health groups, and a host of shared group areas. The goal? Interdisciplinary collaboration. A connecting stair leads to a top-floor arcade and rooftop skylight, and the original loading and parking area was replaced with a public park that creates a new gateway to the Tufts University Campus from the south.
