Creating a safer highway through the use of artificial intelligence
After being awarded a $5.2 million grant, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) had the groundbreaking opportunity to increase safety on the most traveled roadway in the state. Utilizing AI, they aimed to revolutionize their integrated corridor management (ICM) decision support systems. We were there to help.
Looking to use ICM concepts to reduce congestion and improve highway performance and safety, our team collaborated with TDOT, Vanderbilt University, and Southwest Research Institute. Our goal? To develop and deploy an AI-based decision support system (AI-DSS) to facilitate ICM operations along the I-24 SMART Corridor.
For this project, our team is taking a variety of components such as lane control signs, variable speed limits, vehicle detectors, cameras, and traffic signals across five agencies/municipalities and managing them as a single integrated system supported by AI. We’re providing project and grant management, systems engineering, oversight, integration, and performance evaluation services for this innovative solution.
This AI-DSS will reduce the cost and time it takes to deploy DSS across Tennessee and serves as a benchmark for what’s possible across the country. By leveraging AI to understand and quickly process data, we’re able to make intelligent decisions instead of relying upon traditional corridor-specific traffic models.
