Optimizing space with overhead charging infrastructure
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (WMATA) engaged us, as part of a design-build team with Hensel Phelps, to analyze the battery electric bus (BEB) design for overhead pantograph charging infrastructure for the Bladensburg Bus Garage Reconstruction project
Utilizing our ZEVDecide modeling tool, we first provided modeling for energy, route, bus performance, fleet operations, and power to identify the zero-emission technology mix that works best with WMATA bus routes. We then analyzed different charger types and configurations for an overhead inverted pantograph charging system in the outdoor bus storage areas of the facility. Currently, we’re designing the structural support and elevated platform infrastructure and determining clearance requirements for the components. We are also coordinating with Hensel Phelps as they progress on the construction of the new buildings adjacent to the BEB superstructure.
Once the project reaches 30% design, WMATA will review costing details prior to authorizing the next stage of design. Ultimately, the pantographs will charge a total of 100 articulated and 205 standard sized buses.
