Gathering data to help our client determine their greenhouse gas emissions

A greenhouse gas calculation tool helps our client fight against climate change

To fight against the effects of climate change, measuring and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has become part of corporate and social responsibility worldwide. When the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council wanted to know how to go about it, they sought our help.

In partnership with the Council, we helped prepare a methodology for measuring their organizational GHG emissions—by gathering information on their existing assets and business operations and determining the reporting boundary and emission scopes for reporting. Once the contents were confirmed and by using a template developed by our team, we conducted a data scoping exercise to identify the data needed for GHG calculations while also determining any information gaps. This template can be refined and used for future GHG accounting projects. We rounded out our assistance by providing a summary report to the client with recommendations for  following steps to undertake a formal process to complete their GHG carbon inventory.

The result? The Council has a tool to help measure and reduce their carbon emissions footprint, helping them meet their obligations to contribute to New Zealand’s net zero carbon goal by 2050 and be accountable for their climate impacts in the region.
