Supporting pavement performance, monitoring real-world effects design features, and contributing to national research studies
Over 25 years ago in 1988, we began our work with the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) in 14 northeastern U.S. states and six Canadian provinces. We provide equipment, materials, and labor to support pavement performance evaluation, monitor the real-world effects of specific design features, and contribute to a national database for research studies. In 2003, we began to provide our services to another 13 states and two provinces in the North Central region.
Yearly, we plan and execute field testing, gather and assemble roadway data, coordinate testing activities with contractors and highway agencies, review and accept information, and maintain a database. So far, we have gathered comprehensive, research grade data from over 1,300 test sections in the Northeastern and North Central Regions.
Because this information will be used toward future improvement activities and pavement enhancement design, strict controls are in place for quality management. We perform reasonableness, range, and quality checks to ensure only acceptable data is loaded to the database. Information on equipment, calibration procedures, and testing techniques are also detailed in the database.
