A community-driven collaboration identifies goals and initiatives—and urban design standards for future development
With proximity to Charlotte’s downtown, four stations on the city’s Blue Line rail, and dozens of underutilized parcels in prime locations, it’s no wonder that the South End District ranks among the fastest-growing urban districts in the US.
In partnership with the City’s Urban Design Division and Charlotte Center City Partners, our planners and designers created a vision plan that will guide billions of dollars in new public and private investment projects all throughout the business improvement district. What do we have in mind? Converting South Boulevard into an urban, pedestrian-oriented street, preserving places for entrepreneurs and start-ups, and embedding affordable housing into every project. We want to create public spaces, expand and improve the Charlotte Rail Trail, and—overall—create a higher-quality, pedestrian-oriented design.
This 30-year plan identifies a series of goals and initiatives and lays out a linked set of enhanced design standards to help the South End become a truly vibrant place, capitalize on its real estate, and maximize its potential to become Charlotte’s most walkable, transit-oriented neighborhood.
