Accommodating Saskatoon's booming population
When a city adds 7,000 acres for new development, you know they’re growing—and growing fast. In 2010, Saskatoon expanded its east-side boundary to make room for new residents. Brighton, the first neighborhood in Saskatoon’s new Holmwood Sector, covers approximately 900 of those acres and includes residential, office, retail, and institutional additions. 15,000 people will call Brighton home. But every new home has a hiccup or two.
Brighton’s challenge was extensive existing water bodies. We created a plan that worked around and retained the water as recreational amenities—the biggest of these taking up almost 20 acres, a space equal to about 64 Olympic swimming pools! Perfect for canoeing—even ice-skating during the winter. And around the water, photo-perfect walking, biking, and running paths.
This solution allows for stormwater detention and sets aside a natural area for plant and bird species to prosper. We designed a creative solution to a problem that could have bogged down the project.
