Minimizing impacts and maintaining access to residences and businesses on South Catherine Street
South Catherine Street is a major corridor connecting the southern end of the city with the I-87 Northway. As prime consultant, we knew how reliant residents were on this connector, but due to some severe deterioration, rehabilitation was eliminated as an option. With that in mind, we took on the challenge of designing a full depth-roadway reconstruction. On top of that, the existing drainage system frequently left standing water after rain storms, and the decades-old water main underneath the street needed replacement.
To address the greatest challenge—minimizing impacts and maintaining access to residences and businesses—we implemented a one-way traffic pattern during construction. This reduced the number of construction stages, provided a safer work environment, and allowed work to be completed ahead of schedule and under budget.
Pedestrian accommodations are enhanced with two transit bus shelters and upgraded sidewalks. The installation of infiltration basins promotes infiltration and reduces runoff. We also employed sustainable measures, such as reusing on-site materials for embankment and trench backfill.
