Promoting climate resilient communities and supporting infrastructure development.
Despite having a high annual rainfall amount, Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone, experiences many issues with its water supply system. As part of the United States government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation’s (MCC) $44 Million Threshold program with the Government of Sierra Leone, we’re providing due diligence oversight to help strengthen the Guma Valley Water Corporation’s efforts to improve service delivery and increase transparency and accountability.
Facing water supply reliability issues like high water loss, areas with low pressure, and many unbilled water customers, steps need to be taken to strengthen the water sector in the area. To help build local utility capacity, we’re overseeing mapping of existing water supply infrastructure and assisting with strengthening local institutions. We are also overseeing the implementation of district metering and installing water kiosks.
With a better understanding of their water system, and better information to assess performance, Freetown can now take steps to improve service delivery and ensure sustainability.
