Engineering a highly-reliable and efficient cooling system to support cutting-edge research in California
The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory has been creating the future for over half a century and our engineers are making sure they can keep going for decades to come.
One of the world’s premier high energy physics laboratories, the campus is undergoing a major expansion to support their revolutionary super high energy x-rays. This research creates a great deal of heat that must be dissipated through a campus cooling system. Our team was tasked with evaluating the current system to identify the most cost effective way to support the critical laboratory research. Using projections for future demands provided by SLAC, we developed a design for a new 50 megawatt (14,000 ton) cooling tower complex that can serve current and projected research activities.
Research doesn’t stop, so our design allows installation of the new cooling tower in the footprint of the existing cooling tower while maintaining continuous operation of the core cooling system, implemented over a multi-year funding cycle. The new cooling tower will allow the laboratory to continue to provide cutting edge research supported by a highly reliable and efficient cooling system.
