Safer travel isn’t always a straight line
The Columbus Consolidated Government needed to address their chronically troubled intersection of River Road at Bradley Park. They reached out to our team, under our on-call contract, to plan and design improvements to ease congestion and reduce accidents.
We analyzed traffic capacity, right-of-way impacts, safety, and costs and eventually decided on a roundabout to alleviate the traffic problems. This solution avoided the need for an expensive widening while addressing existing and projected traffic needs. We set geometric alignments, designed drainage improvements, and conducted wetland and stream delineation and 404 permitting for a stream crossing. We developed signing and marking, lighting, and construction staging plans. We also provided erosion and sedimentation control design, utility coordination and conflict resolution, and coordination with the Georgia Department of Transportation. The planning process included several stakeholder meetings and public information open houses.
The community continues to benefit from safer travel through this intersection, having experienced an approximately 80 percent reduction in total and severe crashes—those with resulting injury or fatality—and no fatalities to date.
