Public relations were critical to earn community support for this project that underwent a continuous two years of construction

The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) needed to meet the water demands of a vibrant, growing community and provide systemwide resiliency. The River Mountains Water Treatment Facility (RMWTF) was the cornerstone project in this effort and would supplement existing treatment capability within the Las Vegas valley.

As part of a joint venture, our team provided planning, design, and engineering services during two phases of construction. Placing the facility on an alluvial fan in the southeast portion of the valley meant it would be visible to the Henderson community, so SNWA implemented a public relations process in which residents could share concerns. Stakeholder subcommittees provided guidance to address aesthetics, chemical usage, employee and delivery truck access, local trail access, and more. Using 3D design technology, we created one of the first integrated 3D designs in the municipal water supply field. As the facility would also be used for education, our siting plan included viewing platforms, decks, and an open architecture style so visitors could go on an unguided tour of key plant processes.

The completed facility can treat up to 300 million gallons of water per day but was designed to expand up to 600 million gallons of water a day. With continued population growth in the Las Vegas valley, this is a critical component of SNWA’s water resource strategy.
