Developing meaningful, impactful solutions to help improve the lives of residents
Coastal communities around the Great Lakes face increasing levels of shoreline erosion, dune and beach loss, flooding, and storms because of changing weather patterns. Working with the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative (GLSLCI) through their Resilient Coastal Projects Initiative (RCPI), we’ve been helping these communities plan for the anticipated regional impacts of climate change. In addition to addressing coastal hazards, the RCPI is looking to enhance the lives of residents by proposing improved public spaces, more recreational opportunities and wildlife habitats, and overall improved water quality.
In fall 2021, the GLSLCI launched a strategic planning process focused on a holistic view of community needs that goes beyond focusing on specific projects. Since then, GLSLCI and our teams have engaged with nearly 100 coastal communities across the coastlines of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio. These community engagements also helped identify appropriate funding sources and grant opportunities. Our involvement helped inform conversations and planning by tapping into our experience working in local geographies and understanding local concerns.
We’re developing five phase II projects for two communities in Wisconsin, two in Michigan, and a one-mile segment of the North Branch of Ecorse Creek in southeast Michigan. The result is a head start in developing meaningful solutions that coastal communities can implement quickly and impactfully.
