Treating river water sustainably by working with the local habitat
The Dahan River is a crucial source of drinking water for the greater Taipei area. To preserve the quality and long-term sustainability of the Taoyuan City watershed, the City engaged our team to help.
We used nature-based solutions (NbS) to facilitate the improvement plan, from waste treatment and purification to preserving an ecologically important habitat. Our design focused on safeguarding, restoring, and promoting the resilience of this highly sensitive area including growing existing forests and bamboo groves and helping protect the Glycine formosana Hosok—an endemic species of soybean in Taiwan.
By adapting the layout and biodiversity of the constructed wetland ponds in the drainage area, the site will support a daily treatment capacity of over 10,000 tons and result in the reduction of pollution by 62 kilograms (357 pounds). With 5.5 hectares (13.6 acres) of integrated ecosystem wetlands and an established blue and green corridor, the site provides over 146 hectares (361 acres) of protected waterfront and an additional 15.5 hectares (38.3 acres) for parks, pathways, and recreational amenities for residents.
