Rebuilding a roadway to revitalize a downtown
Railroad Avenue extends through the heart of Albany’s downtown business district. With its deteriorating roadway and aging utilities, Albany’s main street needed a fresh look and reconstruction. We helped the City improve eight blocks of roadway—serving nearly 40 small businesses and the city hall, public library, and police department—and support downtown revitalization.
The endeavor included new concrete roadway, widened sidewalks, underground utilities, and decorative street lighting. Our team was involved start to finish: from permitting and design through easement acquisition and construction administration.
Railroad Avenue dates to the late 1800s. Anticipating historic conditions, the team dealt with unknown obstructions and materials including underground fuel tanks and old railroad bridge footings. We applied extra attention to old downtown building foundations and protected them during excavation and reconstruction.
To minimize business disruption, we communicated frequently with affected owners and kept half of the on-street parking available throughout construction.
