Project WISE (WASH in Schools for Everyone) Ethiopia

Infrastructure design and advisory services to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services for students in Addis Ababa

Reaching schools in Addis Ababa with improved water, sanitation, and hygiene services takes thoughtful design and collaboration

Everyone deserves access to clean water and sanitation facilities. That’s why Splash, a US-based non-profit organization, is implementing Project WISE (WASH in Schools for Everyone) in Ethiopia—a five-year effort to reach every government school in Addis Ababa with improved water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), and menstrual health solutions to ultimately benefit over 500,000 children.

Our team worked with Splash and local engineers in Ethiopia to develop standard school sanitation prototypes appropriate for the local context in Addis Ababa. Our design objective was to create a positive and safe sanitation environment for children—especially girls—at school. The resulting design includes safe access for children with special needs, maximizes natural light and ventilation while ensuring privacy, provides easy handwashing access, and integrates water storage and use of local materials.

Our international team’s technical expertise was successfully leveraged with local knowledge to create functional, cost-effective, and aspirational school sanitation prototypes that will be used as a basis for the construction of sanitation facilities at nearly 400 schools across Addis Ababa.
