Engineering solutions that minimize impacts to the existing infrastructure as well as the environment

I-95 is one of the most travelled interstates in the United States, with the Broward Region seeing more than 280,000 vpd. Recognizing that congestion would only worsen with time, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 4 selected Stantec to conduct a project development and environment study along nine miles of I-95 in Broward County to support managed lane implementation.

NPR described I-95 as “one of the least romantic roads ever built. But what it lacks in beauty, it makes up for in utility.” Utility is exactly what this project provides. We considered creative engineering solutions to minimize impacts both to the environment and to existing infrastructure, which includes numerous complex interchanges along this section. And while I-95 may not win beauty pageants any time soon, our team was able to avoid marring the local landscape. By working closely with residents and agency stakeholders, we made sure our work on I-95 didn’t impact nearby North Woodlawn Cemetery. As a result, FDOT was honored by the Broward County Historical Commission for preserving the historical significance of this community landmark.
