Identifying opportunities to enhance a historic corridor through the strategic siting of trail amenities
The Town of Salisbury brought us on board to design the Old Eastern Marsh Trail. This 1.4-mile segment is an important link in the Border to Boston Trail, a proposed 30-mile trail linking eight Essex County communities. The trail begins with a scenic overlook at the Merrimack River and continues through the picturesque Great Marsh, New England’s largest salt marsh.
Our work involved design and permitting services through a MassDOT design review and project approval process. Our integrated team of engineering and design professionals identified opportunities to enhance the corridor through strategic siting of trail amenities including site furnishings, signage, scenic vistas, and landscaping.
The team also met one of the community’s key goals: designing interpretive elements—ultimately giving the trail a unique character and increased appreciation of the corridor’s history and natural resources.
Project design was completed within 12 months to meet the unexpected construction funding deadline, which was made available through the regional Transportation Improvement Program. With this completed link, the Essex County communities have another avenue to experience one of their natural treasures.
