Supporting North Park's mission to educate students in a center for lively socialization

North Park University’s mission: to educate students for meaningful careers and prepare them for lives of significance and service. With the help of our team, the Johnson Center aimed to embody that mission. Primarily developed to raise the quality of the university’s scientific education programs, the Johnson Center’s central location also provides lively settings for socialization.

New laboratories for biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and psychology were built along with flexible learning spaces and a 120 seat tiered lecture hall. Faculty offices, grouped by discipline, are located near student lounges and dispersed throughout the building to encourage student and faculty interaction. A glassy two-story social space and its adjacent bistro are centrally located on the entry level to support the community building goal of the university.

The center’s terra cotta rainscreen and glass exterior complement North Park’s traditional campus buildings and their masonry and stone dressings. The Johnson Center is sited to complete the central campus green developed during the last 20 years, and most importantly, the building embodies the university’s core values by providing a setting where faith, learning, and service meet.
