Changed conditions didn’t halt this transportation improvement
Truck drivers will have easier access to and from the Port of Gulfport thanks to this $300 million, four level, fully directional Canal Road and I-10 interchange is complete. This is Mississippi’s first system-to-system interchange, the largest interchange in the state, and one of the largest in the southeast.
The project was developed in stages due to its size and complexity. A key member of the project team, Stantec is responsible for designing 14 of 20 bridges, eight of which are now complete.
Early on, our survey team faced a major challenge. They had developed topographic boundary surveys and created a digital terrain model to carry forward into design. Then came Hurricane Katrina. The storm’s tremendous destruction required some of the survey to be redone. Despite the setback, we finished the work within the original schedule.
Additionally, we prepared detailed design and contract plans for the interchange, connector ramps to Canal Road, and a frontage road north of I-10 that will maintain access to a sports complex. We were also responsible for traffic signals, pavement marking, signage, and maintenance of traffic plans for the interchange.
