Designing a new elementary school with sustainability in mind

Through the passing of State Bonds, Lytle Independent School District was able to renovate an existing elementary of 53,000 square feet and add an additional 15,000 square feet. The elementary school’s classrooms encircle collaborative learning commons.

These spaces are large enough for several classes to work together and also include enclosed spaces—think capsules—for small group learning. Technology is prevalent throughout the school with iPads in every classroom and numerous learning spaces outside of the classroom where students can collaborate.

The new elementary school is designed with sustainability in mind. Enlarged windows provide natural daylight. We reduced the electoral load with occupancy sensors, daylight sensors, and high efficiency lights. A rainwater collection system in a shaded learning courtyard helps nurture the native plants and encourage environmental education.
