Accommodating future traffic needs and providing an emergency evacuation route for area residents
People living in Vero Beach, Florida are no strangers to challenges that come when traffic increases, especially during hurricane evacuations. When the Florida Department of Transportation, District 4, needed a new interchange—to improve hurricane preparedness, emergency response times, and connectivity on Interstate 95 (I-95) at Oslo Road—they engaged us to help.
We provided roadway, bridge, and lighting designs, along with project management, for the new interchange. As the prime consultant, we managed the design team that included six subconsultants. Our role included project management, design survey, right-of-way mapping, and roadway, bridge, and lighting design. One of the main challenges was to design an interchange layout for enhanced regional connectivity while reducing the impact of the project on local residents and businesses.
The results of the project not only improved incident response times along the I-95, but also connections and travel time—additional roadway improvements mean better evacuation routes for residents during hurricane season. Our work also complements the County’s planned vision of economic development for the area.
