Improving traffic capacity to reduce heavy congestion along one of the state’s busiest commuter routes
Traffic jams were the norm at the I-95/I-93/University Avenue interchanges. Located along one of the state’s busiest commuter routes, the interchanges were the site for accidents and heavy congestion.
Our team was called in to improve traffic capacity and flow. Our engineers’ work began with the preparation of an Environmental Impact Report and Environmental Assessment and continues through design. Key design elements include 12 highway bridges, a pedestrian bridge, a pedestrian tunnel, 36 retaining walls, four culvert modifications, three new culverts, a new highway lighting system, and new traffic signs. In addition, our design reconfigures the highway ramps primarily within the existing right-of-way, and widens the road to four travel lanes.
The final design brings with it a safer and faster commute. It also brings environmental enhancements to the community. Improved drainage systems will enhance stormwater treatment, while the ramp and roadway demolition presents an opportunity to recreate wetlands, flood storage, and animal habitats.
