Engineering a major expansion to significantly increase the roadway capacity of Florida's I-595
Travelling along Florida’s I-595 east-west corridor between I-75 and I-95 is going to be a whole lot easier. As part of this public-private partnership effort, our engineers designed improvements to two segments encompassing three miles—including a three-level, complex urban interchange.
This major expansion will significantly increase roadway capacity. How? With a widened mainline, three new reversible express lanes (with variable toll rates), and safer merging through braided or intertwined ramps.
Our design of three new braided-ramp bridges, as well as major modifications to the University Drive interchange, saved five bridges from replacement. Instead of removing the bridges, we retrofitted most of them, including the third-level ramp bridge which was partially replaced and raised 18 inches.
This novel solution to a complex challenge meant a win for Florida travelers and taxpayers alike—the design carved $40 million from the $1.2 billion price tag.
