Incorporating a thoughtful landscaping design into an urban freeway corridor
When does celebrating native wildlife and sustainable plant life contribute to traffic calming and improving safety? When thoughtful landscaping design is incorporated into an urban freeway corridor.
The expansion and renovation of Interstate 15’s southern corridor in Las Vegas, from Silverado Ranch interchange to Tropicana interchange, was designed to calm traffic; create an identity for Las Vegas tourists; and improve traffic flow, access, and safety.
Stantec provided landscape architecture services for this design-build project for NDOT that included six miles of roadway and 23 bridges. Stakeholders selected a concept prepared by our team that celebrates wildlife and botanical diversity captured in custom-designed graphics displayed throughout the corridor. Over the course of the project, our team prepared ongoing working drawings to stay ahead of construction. The final design integrates earthform walls designed to simulate natural rock outcroppings, freestanding weathered steel 3D wildlife, metal art on bridges and walls, custom wall and bridge formliner treatments, and introduces native plants with no irrigation to promote sustainability and low maintenance.
