Enhancing traffic operations by adding freeway capacity to Interstate 05
The I-405 Sepulveda Pass improvements project will reduce existing and forecasted traffic congestion on one of Los Angeles’ most traveled freeways and enhance traffic operations by adding freeway capacity. This is being accomplished by adding a 10 mile High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane on the northbound I-405 between I-10 and U.S. 101, realigning 27 on and off ramps, widening 13 existing underpasses and structures, and constructing approximately 18 miles of retaining and sound walls. Three overpasses at Sunset Boulevard, Skirball Center Drive, and Mulholland Drive are being rebuilt.
As part of our construction management support services contract with Los Angeles Metro, the team blends Metro, Caltrans, and Stantec staff in an integrated project management office through the bid period and initial construction period.
We coordinated with a major contractor, the public, and other project stakeholders to close sections of the freeway for 72 hours to accommodate demolition of the historic Mulholland Bridge. We developed an outreach approach using social media and other means to alert the public well in advance of the shutdown. The closure, demolition, clean-up, and re-opening of the freeway transpired without incident and 18 hours ahead of schedule.
