Developing design solutions to address congestion and improve safety, benefiting both the customer and the community

The goal of the Garden State Parkway’s governing agency, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, is to ensure the safe travel of its patrons—so when the Authority undertook a Parkway widening program to add a third lane in both directions from mileposts 35 to 80, address safety issues, and reduce crashes, Stantec was there to help.

Providing improvements between mileposts 35 to 38 was no easy feat, however. As vehicles exited Interchange 36 at Tilton Road, they were met with a stop condition that stymied traffic flow and caused back-ups onto the Parkway. Interchanges 37 and 38 were no better—motorists who entered the Parkway at Interchange 38 from the Atlantic City Expressway had to merge onto the Parkway southbound and compete with the traffic that wanted to depart the Parkway at Exit 37, causing dangerous weaving issues.

The solutions? Creating an innovative scissor ramp to alleviate the weaving at Interchanges 37 and 38, widening the Parkway to three lanes in each direction, providing standard-width shoulders, and designing six replacement bridges to accommodate our roadway improvements. Now, traffic travels smoothly from exit to exit, improving the Parkway’s infrastructure for years to come.
