Working with federal, state, and local agencies to restore stream health to benefit the surrounding community
Picture this—a creek running through your community—but, rather than a healthy, flowing stream, it’s littered with rusted car parts, old appliances, and debris jams causing erosion. Dewey’s Creek needed help. Partnering with Prince William County, we developed a stream restoration plan that included assessment and design, hydrologic/hydraulic modeling, construction plan preparation, permitting support, and project supervision.
A creek is a dynamic environment. So, our team worked with landowners regarding potential changes in the floodplain and resources protection area limits. With debris and sediment issues addressed, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources also wanted to enhance the environment for anadromous fish, providing them passage that was previously blocked. The project required a detailed FEMA Conditional Letter of Map Revision where we developed a floodplain alteration study.
Over the project’s 6,200-linear foot length, we consulted with a range of stakeholders, from landowners to federal, state, and county agencies on creating a plan to turn an eyesore into an asset. A total of $2 million was secured from the Stormwater Local Assistance Fund and Hurricane Sandy Funds to support the project.
