Bike trail completions let cyclists go farther and get closer to nature in the Union Valley
As urbanization continues, there is a greater need for opportunities to be closer to nature. The Union Valley Bike Trial offers closer contact with the natural environment for cyclists and pedestrians. We are providing design services for two separate segments (1.5 miles and 4.5 miles) that will create a 12-mile-long continuous bike path between multiple campgrounds along the eastern and northern sides of the Union Valley Reservoir.
Our role includes engineering, environmental, permitting, and construction support services to the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. The project is part of its recreational component requirements for the utility’s Upper American River Project Federal Energy Regulatory Commission license conditions.
Located in mountainous terrain in the Sierra Nevada range, the trail route has challenging land features and sensitive habitats including several drainage/creek crossings, steep cross slopes, large rock outcroppings, and fragile meadow/wetlands. Major civil design and planned structures include three bridge crossings (up to 80-foot spans), elevated boardwalks (6300 feet), open bottom arch culverts, rockery retaining walls, and rock face cut slopes.
