Environmental assessment for one of Virginia's most contaminated rivers
Public and private partnerships is the way of the future. Ahead of its time, this project is considered by many to be a hallmark in the integration of public initiatives to improve the health and quality of the degraded Elizabeth River, and private efforts to construct a multi-modal marine terminal with the latest advances in operational efficiency and port security. Perhaps the largest single private permit action in Virginia history, with our help and expertise, this project was permitted within 12 months without the need for a formal environmental impact statement.
Work in the Elizabeth River watershed required a balanced approach to minimize direct impacts and ensure collateral impacts were both anticipated and managed, resulting in a successful outcome for our client and the environment. We provided the design for impacts to 189 acres of submerged bottomland and over 23 acres of jurisdictional wetlands including the dredging of 10.3 million cubic yards of material to support Suezmax vessels. Now we are conducting wetland mitigation monitoring to maintain compliance.
