Designing, permitting, and constructing the Pamunkey Farms Mitigation Bank

We designed, permitted, and constructed the Pamunkey Farms Mitigation Bank (Bank). Multiple environmental services had to be completed before the Bank received approval including resource surveys; detailed stream and wetland mitigation assessments; agency permitting and coordination; and construction plans, and continues with several monitoring and reporting activities.

One of the unique factors about the Bank is the nutrient component. It was created by agricultural conversion to forested cover and quantifying the associated nutrient reductions. We prepared the nutrient reduction implementation plan that served as the basis for the certification of the Bank. Approximately 41.93 lbs of total phosphorus reduction were generated and made available for sale through Virginia’s Nutrient Credit Exchange Program within the York River watershed. These nutrient credits give communities a creative opportunity to reduce nutrient loads to the Chesapeake Bay to help meet their stormwater compliance objectives.

But that’s not all; the Bank also incorporates several federally threatened and endangered species and associated habitats.
